The United States IndonesiaSociety (USINDO) invites
applications for its 2008 travel/study grant
forpost-doctoral scholars, Ph.D. candidates, senior
academics, and otherwiseprofessionally qualified
candidates to engage in field research in Indonesiaon
an economic or political-economic topic. This grant
is available to United States citizens and permanent
residentsin the United States with aspecific project
relating to the political economy of Indonesia. The
Indonesian SumitroFellowship is open to an Indonesian
citizen with a project related to the Indonesian-United
States relationship. Previous travel to, and
experience in, Indonesia or the United States(for
Indonesian Sumitro applicants) is desirable but not
necessarily arequirement. The deadline for the
2007Sumitro Fellows Applications is Friday, November
2, 2007.
The Sumitro Fellows programhonors Dr. Sumitro
Djojohadikusumo, Indonesia's senior economist
andadvisor to USINDO, who passed away on March 9,
2001. An architect of Indonesia's modern economy,
Professor Sumitroheaded the faculty of economics at
the University of Indonesia,and was later a minister
of trade and minister of state for research. Professor
Sumitro was also the driving force behind a 1950's
program of theFord Foundation which sent Indonesian
economists to U.S. academic institutions foradvanced
degrees. Many attended the Universityof California at
Berkeley and the group came to be known asthe
"Berkeley Mafia" when its members assumed many key
cabinet posts insubsequent decades.
The Sumitro Fellowsgrants for the 2008 application
cycle are $10,000 each.
Sumitro FellowsApplication Guidelines for 2008
Eligibility: Applicantsfor the US SumitroFellowship
must be United States citizens or permanent residents
in the United States with a specific project on
Indonesia'spolitical economy. Applications outside
the scope of economics orpolitical economy will notbe
considered. Applicants for the Indonesian Sumitro
Fellowshipmust be Indonesian citizens with a specific
project on any aspect of theIndonesian-US
relationship. Applications related strictly to
Americantopics or on non-US or non-Asian themes
willnot be considered. Applicants will be considered
withoutregard to race, color, religion, sex, age
and/or physical impairment.
LanguageProficiency: Please note that though
notcompulsory, prior study of Bahasa Indonesia is
helpful in conducting fieldresearch. Applicant should
indicate on the application form if and atwhat level
the language has been studied, both formally and
informally. Indonesian applicants must be capable of
advanced study in English. Evidence of English fluency
may be demonstrated by TOEFL scores.
Notification: USINDO will announce the winner in
December, 2007.

suchas writing samples, course syllabi, etc. Materials

Facultymembers and lecturers are asked to submit
course syllabi that do not exceed fivepages.
