Web Address : http://www.lucl.leidenuniv.nl

Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Phonology; Psycholinguistics

Required Language(s): Dutch (nld)

Description:

One PhD Position / promotieplaats full time

Vacancy number: to be announced

Project description:

Studying the phonology of aphasia in a research project on ‘Child language, aphasia and general sound laws revisited.’

Most of the recent research into sound structure in aphasia has been conducted within the area of psycholinguistics. Phonological errors have been studied, plus the functional loci of these errors, but much less the phonological representations or the phonological grammars that could give a theoretical account of these errors. This project will contribute to working out a model of
aphasia which is inspired by phonological theory as well as psycholinguistic modeling, by studying the linguistic principles that could govern the structure of consonant and vowel inventories in the speech of people with aphasia, while talking into account findings from psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic studies.

The focus will be on data from Dutch. Since the amount of reliable phonological data of aphasics is not very large, the candidate will have to invest a substantial amount of time collecting relevant data, both from production and from perception. Patients will be recruited from a Rotterdam revalidation centre, which will also make available to us a relatively large sample of recorded data. All these different types of data will have to be interpreted in collaboration with a PhD student working on segment inventories in child language acquisition, and with a postdoc working on the typology of segment inventories, in a research project which has as its main goal reexamining Roman Jakobson’s famous claims about the role of a phonological feature in child
language, aphasia and general sound laws.

Tasks:
  • performing repetition and naming experiments and collecting of spontaneous
  • speech samples with aphasics;
  • performing phoneme detection studies using mismatch negativity tests,
  • measured in an EEG;
  • giving a theoretical interpretation of the data, in collaboration with
  • colleagues and supervisors;
  • reporting the results in international journals and a dissertation;
  • presenting the results in national and international conferences;
  • following graduate courses offered at the LUCL graduate school.

Requirements:

  • an MA or MPHil degree in general linguistics, theoretical or
  • patholinguistics, or a comparable field;
  • demonstrable interest in both phonological theory and experimental research;
  • good working knowledge of Dutch and English;
  • good organisational and contactual skills;
  • independence of mind.

More information about the position and project is available at http://www.lucl.leidenuniv.nl/index.php3?m=&c=571 and

Conditions of employment:

The successful applicant will be appointed at the department TUCL for one year and after a positive evaluation, followed by a fixed- term period of three years.

Gross salary will be ? 2000,- per month in the first year, gradually rising, also depending upon the evaluation, to ? 2612,- per month in the final year conform the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities.

Scholarship for Broadcast Journalism

Broadcast Journalism on Social Conflict and Cohesion International Course Broadcast Journalism (Radio/TV) Theme: Social Conflict and Cohesion 12 week course from February 2nd – April 24th, 2009

RNTC application deadline: 15th August 2008 Embassy NFP application deadline: 1st October 2008

The deadline for non-fellowship applicants is November 15th, 2008

Further information please contact: liza.marsin@nesoindonesia.or.id

Course Aims: To strengthen the capacity of broadcast journalists and the organisations they work for to research, investigate and report for broadcast and new media in a responsible and ethical way on issues that divide individuals and groups in their countries and thereby (potentially) threaten social cohesion.
Role of the media in changing societies Societies in development are societies undergoing change. Inherent in such a process of change is the potential for tension and conflict among individuals and groups in society. Some of this potential for tension and conflict may be the reflection of longstanding divisions - political, religious, ethnic. Some will have more to do with a circumstantial clash of interests – for instance between the old and the new (tradition versus modernity) and between individuals and groups competing for greater influence and prosperity in the society that is evolving. Broadcast journalists and the organisations they work for have an important role to play here; they have to ensure that the great issues of concern to their societies and the attendant debates are given attention to and that the voices and views of those involved are heard.

Integrity and credibility They also have to be prepared to tackle controversial issues which are not being given the attention they deserve and by so doing help set the political agenda. But they also have a responsibility to do so without exacerbating existing divisions or threatening the social cohesion of the societies they serve. To achieve this, the maintenance of their integrity and of their credibility as broadcast journalists is crucial; they may not be perceived as representing certain population or interest groups at the expense of others. In addition they must develop the journalistic knowledge and skills they need to investigate and present potentially divisive issues accurately and in
a balanced non-partisan way.

Investigative research and analysis The courses will focus on the role, responsibility and requirements of the broadcast journalist in meeting this challenge. Special attention will be given to developing and putting into practice the appropriate knowledge and skills for (investigative) research and analysis and for the production of various broadcast and internet assignments as well as to other essential broadcast journalism skills such as interpretation, speed and accuracy under pressure, communication and teamwork. There will be a considerable measure of interaction and exchange of knowledge and skills between radio and television.

Multimedia Course participants will work with analogue and digital technology for radio and television and be involved in the design and development of material for an Internet site related to the theme and focus of the course. As well as attending sessions devoted to developing their knowledge and skills in the field of news and current affairs participants will be sent out on assignments to various locations in the Netherlands linked to the theme of social conflict and cohesion and to the role and responsibility of the broadcast journalist in this field. After leaving the Netherlands at the end of the course participants will become part of a network of journalists and other experts through RNTC’s website, intended to foster co-operation and the further exchange of ideas and experience in the field of broadcast journalism.

Zebrafish As A Model Organism To Study Lowe Syndrome Faculty of Life Sciences Dr Martin Lowe Project to start September 2008

Lowe syndrome (LS) is an X-linked disorder affecting the brain, kidneys and eyes. It is caused by mutation of OCRL1, an inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase localised to the Golgi apparatus, endosomes and lamellipodia. OCRL1 appears to regulate actin dynamics and membrane traffic, but the mechanisms involved are poorly defined, and consequently we do not understand how loss of OCRL1 brings about the symptoms associated with LS. Progress in this area has been hampered by the lack of a model organism that recapitulates the syndrome pathology.

This project aims to utilise zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model to investigate the role of OCRL1 in development, and to gain insight into how loss of the protein brings about the defects associated with LS. During the first part of the project ablation of OCRL1 by morpholino injection and over-expression of exogenous OCRL constructs will be performed, and the phenotypic consequences of these manipulations during early embryogenesis studied, focussing on the developing brain and kidney.
A variety of modern microscopy and molecular techniques will be used for this purpose.

The analysis will be then be expanded by obtaining zebrafish containing mutant OCRL1 alleles. This will permit a detailed investigation of the role of OCRL1 during both early and later stages of development, and hopefully serve as a valuable model for future screening of potential therapeutics.

For more details about this project please contact Dr Martin Lowe (martin.p.lowe@manchester.ac.uk ) or the Faculty of Life Sciences Graduate Office (Email: pg.lifesciences@manchester.ac.uk , Tel: 0161 275 5608)
This studentship is available to applicants from all nationalities.
Applicants will need a UK upper second class or first class honours degree (or overseas equivalent).
