A graduate research position in biogeochemistry is available for a highly motivated and talented Ph.D. student to investigate peatland responses to climate change by field studies and modeling as part of the Research group “Soil processes under extreme meteorological conditions” funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG, FOR562; see http://www.bayceer.uni-bayreuth.de/fg_bp/index.php?lang=en).
The study relies on centrally maintained and well supported experimental ecosystem manipulations of soil moisture and water table levels by roofs and drainage systems and is located in the Fichtelgebirge mountains east of Bayreuth, Germany. The study aims at elucidating the coupled biogeochemical dynamics of carbon, sulfur and iron in the soils and their impact on methane production and fluxes.
The modeling part will address carbon and methane dynamics and use the model ECOSYS in collaboration with Dr. Robert Grant from the University of Alberta, Canada. The position encompasses a net salary of about €1000/month (EG 13TV-L 50%) and additional benefits such as health and unemployment insurance. It should begin as early as 01/04/2008 but a later begin can be accommodated if necessary. Course Aims: To strengthen the capacity of broadcast journalists and the organisations they work for to research, investigate and report for broadcast and new media in a responsible and ethical way on issues that divide individuals and groups in their countries and thereby (potentially) threaten social cohesion.
Role of the media in changing societies Societies in development are societies undergoing change. Inherent in such a process of change is the potential for tension and conflict among individuals and groups in society. Some of this potential for tension and conflict may be the reflection of longstanding divisions - political, religious, ethnic. Some will have more to do with a circumstantial clash of interests – for instance between the old and the new (tradition versus modernity) and between individuals and groups competing for greater influence and prosperity in the society that is evolving. Broadcast journalists and the organisations they work for have an important role to play here; they have to ensure that the great issues of concern to their societies and the attendant debates are given attention to and that the voices and views of those involved are heard.
Integrity and credibility They also have to be prepared to tackle controversial issues which are not being given the attention they deserve and by so doing help set the political agenda. But they also have a responsibility to do so without exacerbating existing divisions or threatening the social cohesion of the societies they serve. To achieve this, the maintenance of their integrity and of their credibility as broadcast journalists is crucial; they may not be perceived as representing certain population or interest groups at the expense of others. In addition they must develop the journalistic knowledge and skills they need to investigate and present potentially divisive issues accurately and in
a balanced non-partisan way.
Investigative research and analysis The courses will focus on the role, responsibility and requirements of the broadcast journalist in meeting this challenge. Special attention will be given to developing and putting into practice the appropriate knowledge and skills for (investigative) research and analysis and for the production of various broadcast and internet assignments as well as to other essential broadcast journalism skills such as interpretation, speed and accuracy under pressure, communication and teamwork. There will be a considerable measure of interaction and exchange of knowledge and skills between radio and television.
Multimedia Course participants will work with analogue and digital technology for radio and television and be involved in the design and development of material for an Internet site related to the theme and focus of the course. As well as attending sessions devoted to developing their knowledge and skills in the field of news and current affairs participants will be sent out on assignments to various locations in the Netherlands linked to the theme of social conflict and cohesion and to the role and responsibility of the broadcast journalist in this field. After leaving the Netherlands at the end of the course participants will become part of a network of journalists and other experts through RNTC’s website, intended to foster co-operation and the further exchange of ideas and experience in the field of broadcast journalism.

Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) and the WHO
South East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) invite nationals from the WHO South
East Asia Region (SEA) to apply for a 12-24 month fellowship on Project
Management of Tropical Diseases Research. The training involves a placement
in the WHO Regional Office (New Delhi) working with the professional staff
involved located in the Departments of Communicable Diseases (CDS) and
Health System Development (HSD).
Summary of the Training Programme and Activities
Under the supervision of CDS and VBC/SEARO-TDR/SEARO focal point, the
successful candidate will perform the following tasks:
In coordination with the technical units involved in TDR/SEARO, assist VBC/SEARO unit-the focal point TDR/SEARO in administration of SEARO/TDR Small Grants Scheme including: preparation of call for applications, review of proposals for funding, preparing and conducting Selection Committee meetings.
Assist VBC/SEARO-TDR/SEARO focal point in preparation of TSA for selected projects, active follow-up of the projects’ implementation, analysis of reports, disseminating the new research information and promoting utilisation of the results by the control programmes.
Promote TDR activities at all levels with the aim of improving tropical disease control in SEA countries including preparation of research methodology workshops, strengthen coordination and communication among all relevant unites in SEARO and TDR/HQ.
Develop comprehensive SEARO/TDR computerized database based on the already available database for SEARO/TDR Small Grant Scheme. Produce specific outputs from the database (reports, circular letters, website entries, etc.), as needed.
Prepare research portfolio containing summaries of final reports of the research projects to ensure communicating the results of the TDR research projects to all concerned parties. Support TDR/HQ activities in the region as requested by TDR/HQ including site visits, preparation of reports for TDR’s Research Strengthening Group (RSG), Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee (STAC), and the Joint Coordinating Board (JCB).

Applications are requested from nationals of the WHO South East Asia Region working or involved in the Ministries of Health, academic or research institutions and/or who recently completed a period of post-graduate training (M.Sc., MD or Ph.D.). Preference will be given to candidates under 35 years old, holding an advanced degree in health related sciences. Computer skills (MS Office) are required. A good working knowledge of English is required..

Singapore Technologies Engineering Scholarships
RSIS invites applications for the Singapore Technologies Engineering Scholarships. The Singapore Technologies Engineering Scholarship is open to Singaporeans, Singapore Permanent Residents and International candidates to pursue the full-time Masters programme at RSIS.
Applicants should have (a) an excellent academic record; and (b) a very good command of the English language.
Terms and Conditions :
Each scholarship is tenable for one year only for full-time Master of Science (Strategic Studies), Master f Science (International Relations), Master of Science (International Political Economy) and Masters of Science (Asian Studies) programmes. Successful candidates are expected to complete their studies within the tenable period. There is no bond attached to the scholarships.
Each scholarship shall cover the following:
• A monthly stipend;
• A book allowance (one-time payment only);
