PhD Studentship: EPSRC Molecular Nose Project
Modelling and analysis of sensed behaviours in biochemical networks
Supervisor: Professor Muffy Calder
The Molecular Nose is an exciting, large interdisciplinary research
project involving biochemistry, cell biology, engineering, chemistry,
and computing science. The goal of the project is to build a
multiplexed sensor platform that can assess and quantify dynamic
changes in the functional state of biochemical networks in mammalian
cells, and use these data to reconstruct cell network interactions and
their dynamic behaviour on a systems wide level. The concept
underpinning this platform is fundamentally different from existing
methods used in the biological sciences to assess cell function, and
similar to the Electronic Nose, where an array of sensors is trained
with individual stimuli to establish a library of response patterns
which subsequently are used to deconvolute complex inputs. In this
project, Professors Calder and Girolami (Computing Science) will
establish a computational framework of modules for the interpretation
of input-output relationships and prediction of functional network
behaviours in response to perturbations. The aim of this studentship
is to analyse and predict how modules interact with each other. The
starting point will be Calders previous work on the interaction of
features in telecommunications networks, and also process algebraic
models of biochemical networks.
The studentship is for four years.
The studentship is suitable for candidates with a good first degree
(or Masters) in Computing Science or Mathematics, a willingness to
engage with biochemistry and engineering and to work as part of a
interdisciplinary team.

PhD Research FelIow at the Department of Mathematics
At the Department of Mathematics, University of Bergen we have an open position for 3 years.
In collaboration with the Interventional Centre (www.ivs.no) at RikshospitaletRadiumhospitalet and the Centre of Mathematics for Applications (CMA, www.cma.uio.no), we have been granted the eVita project «MATMED» (Mathematical and computational methods for co-registering multi-modal medical images) from The Research Council of Norway. Two PhD positions have already been announced for the project. This tbird position will be based in Bergen. Tbe successful candidate will work on mathematical models and fast numerical methods for image segmentation, edge detection and shape construction methods. The candidate is also expected to collaborate with other team meinbers on topica related to non-rigid registration methods for multi-modal 3D image data and video streams with 3D image data.
We look for a candidate with background in one or several ofthe following areas; PDE (partial differential equation) based image processing, numerical PDE, optimization algorithms, medical image processing with registration and segmentation, computer vision.
Applicants must have achieved a cand.scient-degree, a masters degree in applied and computational mathematics or related areas, or have submitted the master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however, that the examination results are announcecl within 4 weeks of the ciosing date for submitting the master thesis.
The candidate must take part in the Universitys approved PhD program leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Hence, applicants must meet the formal admission requirements for the PhD program. In total, the fellowship period is 3 years. Prof. Tai will be the main supervisor for this PhD position. The length of the fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as a research fellow.
The starting salary is at levd 41 (code 1017) on the government salary scale (corresponding to NOK 310.500 per year), following ordinary meriting regulations. (Wage levels 41/46).

PhD studentships Advanced Engine Combustion Technology and their Emission
Three fully funded PhD studentships are available for candidates who are
interested in carrying out
research on the development of diesel engines for low carbon emissions. The
students working on
these projects will be registered for a degree of PhD at the School of
Engineering and Design,
Brunel University. Research on internal combustion engines and their fuels
at Brunel University is
internationally leading and amongst the most active in Europe. The group’s
expertise covers both
experimental and theoretical studies, and is aimed at minimizing pollutant
emissions and improving
fuel efficiency of gasoline and diesel engines.
The main focus of this project will be on the understanding of the use of
advanced bio-fuels in
diesel engines, mainly to study the fuel effects on the in-cylinder
combustion and the exhaust
emissions. The research project involves both experimental and theoretical
work. Various
experimental techniques such as LIF, LII and sampling will be employed in
these projects. The
experimental work will be carried out in an (optical) diesel engine.
Extensive theoretical work will be
carried out to analyse the experimental data.
Candidates should have Bachelors or Masters Degree with a 1st or 2:1 (or
equivalent) in a relevant
engineering or sciences discipline, with a background in engines or with an
interest in the use of
lasers and optics. Good experimental skills and knowledge in computer
programming would be
greatly beneficial. Funding for the successful candidate will include the
payment of tuition fees and a stipend currently at £12,300 per year, for 3
years.

SUMITRO FELLOWS 2008 GRANT APPLICATIONS
The United States IndonesiaSociety (USINDO) invites
applications for its 2008 travel/study grant
forpost-doctoral scholars, Ph.D. candidates, senior
academics, and otherwiseprofessionally qualified
candidates to engage in field research in Indonesiaon
an economic or political-economic topic. This grant
is available to United States citizens and permanent
residentsin the United States with aspecific project
relating to the political economy of Indonesia. The
Indonesian SumitroFellowship is open to an Indonesian
citizen with a project related to the Indonesian-United
States relationship. Previous travel to, and
experience in, Indonesia or the United States(for
Indonesian Sumitro applicants) is desirable but not

The Sumitro Fellows programhonors Dr. Sumitro
Djojohadikusumo, Indonesia's senior economist
andadvisor to USINDO, who passed away on March 9,
2001. An architect of Indonesia's modern economy,
Professor Sumitroheaded the faculty of economics at
the University of Indonesia,and was later a minister
of trade and minister of state for research. Professor
Sumitro was also the driving force behind a 1950's
program of theFord Foundation which sent Indonesian
economists to U.S. academic institutions foradvanced
degrees. Many attended the Universityof California at
Berkeley and the group came to be known asthe
"Berkeley Mafia" when its members assumed many key
cabinet posts insubsequent decades.

Natural Hazards Center Seeks Post-Doctoral Researcher
The Natural Hazards Center is seeking to hire a professional research
assistant/post-doctoral
scholar to assist with the coordination of its research program. This
soft-money appointment
extends for one year with the possibility of extension to two-three years.
The purpose of the position is to collaborate with the Natural Hazards
Center director, program
manager, research coordinator, and other staff on Center projects funded by
NSF, the Department
of Homeland Security, and others. The position will play a lead role in a
newly funded Center
project on preparedness among community-based and faith-based organizations
and other
non-profits providing services to at-risk populations in the San Francisco
Bay Area.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: PhD in a social/behavioral science discipline or closely related
field (e.g., public
health).
Skills & Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of both qualitative and
quantitative research
methods, procedures, and techniques; experience coordinating fieldwork
teams; advanced
knowledge of qualitative data analysis techniques; excellent oral and
written communication
skills, accompanied by the ability to communicate with diverse audiences
both inside and outside
academia; excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with
others; and the ability
to design, plan, implement, troubleshoot, and administer all phases of the
research work. Must be
willing to travel.
